Airport to Parks

MCO to Theme Parks — Airport to Orlando Parks Family Guide

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the gateway for most families visiting Central Florida's theme parks. This guide covers the practical logistics of getting from the airport to your hotel and the parks — transportation options, timing your arrival day, where to stay relative to the parks, and how to make the most of your first and last days when you are in transit.

Who This Guide Is For

  • Families flying into MCO for a theme park vacation
  • First-time visitors unsure about transportation from the airport
  • Parents planning arrival-day and departure-day activities
  • Visitors choosing between on-site and off-site hotels

Transportation from MCO to the Parks

MCO's new Terminal C connects to the main terminal via an automated people mover. Regardless of which terminal you arrive at, ground transportation options are the same. The main choices for families are rental cars, rideshare services (Uber/Lyft), and private shuttle services.

Rental cars give you maximum flexibility, especially if you plan to visit parks across multiple resort complexes or dine off-property. Drive times from MCO: approximately 25 minutes to Walt Disney World (Lake Buena Vista), 20 minutes to Universal Orlando (International Drive area), and 20 minutes to SeaWorld Orlando.

If staying at a Disney or Universal resort, you may not need a car. Disney resort guests have complimentary bus, monorail, and boat transportation to all four parks. Universal resort guests can walk to the original two parks and shuttle to Epic Universe. However, traveling between Disney and Universal properties without a car requires rideshare (approximately $20 to $30 each way).

Where to Stay Relative to the Parks

Your hotel location determines your daily commute and transportation needs. On-site resort hotels (Disney, Universal, or SeaWorld properties) offer the shortest commute and perks like early park entry. Off-site hotels on International Drive or in Kissimmee are typically 30 to 50 percent cheaper but require driving or rideshare to every park.

For families visiting both Disney and Universal, the International Drive corridor offers a central location. Hotels near the I-Drive / Universal Boulevard intersection are approximately 15 minutes from both resort complexes. This is also where SeaWorld is located, making it a practical base for multi-resort trips.

Making the Most of Arrival and Departure Days

If your flight arrives before noon, you can visit a park the same afternoon. Check into your hotel, change into park clothes, and arrive at a park by 3 or 4 PM. Evening visits are less crowded and cooler — you can ride several headliners and catch the nighttime show. This effectively adds a half-day to your trip.

For departure day, plan a morning-only park visit if your flight leaves after 2 PM. Arrive at rope drop, ride for two to three hours, then head to the airport. MCO recommends arriving two hours before domestic flights, so work backward from your flight time.

If your arrival or departure timing does not allow a park visit, Disney Springs and Universal CityWalk are free entertainment districts with dining, shopping, and atmosphere — no park ticket required.

Stocking Up Before the Parks

Stop at a grocery store on the way from MCO to your hotel. Publix and Walmart locations are plentiful along the main routes. Stock up on bottled water, snacks, sunscreen, and breakfast items. In-park food is expensive (expect $12 to $18 per adult meal at quick-service restaurants), so having breakfast at your hotel and packing snacks saves a meaningful amount over a week-long trip.
